    Home network problems

    Hi folks,
I have home network problem that is driving me mad.
I have a VM superhub and
    1 pc wired connection (Vista)
1 laptop wireless connection (Win 7)
Both machines can connect to the internet.
The two machines belong to the same workgroup but cannot see each other and cannot file or printer share.

The odd thing is when I connect the laptop via a wired connection ( so both machines are now wired) the network works ok and I can file and printer share ok .
Any body know what is causing the problem when the laptop is connested wirelessly?

    Thanks.

Windows firewall I would say or the network type in Windows - if its public then it may block file print sharing ports

    Thanks for your reply m8,
Network types are 'home' in Win 7 and 'private' in vista.
What adjustments do I need to make to windows firewall?
Why does the network function ok when both machines are wired but not when the laptop is using wireless connection?

    Re: Home network problems

    Anyone any ideas on this?
Network, file and printer sharing work ok when both machines have wired connections.
When I use the wireless connection on the laptop the 2 machines cannot see other and file/ printer sharing obviously does not work.

    Re: Home network problems

as Jfish suggested its probably the windows firewall is on when you use wireless but off on wired connection or when you setup in win 7 wireless you have chosen public network which turns off network discovery by default.

in windows 7 open action centre and security this will tell you if windows fire wall is on/off and a link to turn on/off

not sure how superhub works but are wired ports on hub on the same ip range as wireless ip's, i have a custom build all my wireless devices are on 192.168.1.x and wired are on 192.168.0.x

check ip add on vista machine and then on win7 and check they are in the same ramge.

Have you enabled file sharing ?

it sounds like a firewall issue though, I would guess you have different settings for the firewall when on wireless to wired mate.

    Alrite M8,

Is the firewall turned on? Or it is showing an error?

Known issue with win 7 & vista if so..!!

    No solution as yet.

Some routers have a wireless guest mode (this is normally an additional SSID to that originally setup), if connected to this it will allow access to internet but will not allow you access to other wired/wirelessly connected devices, not sure if vm superhub has this feature, but something to check for in the manual

Network settings for both machines is private m8.
Disabled windows firewall on both machines - still no joy. Can't even ping one machine from the other and vice versa.
IP addresses for both are in the 192.168.0.x range.

File and printer sharing enabled m8.
What are these firewall settings you mention m8? As far as I can see i can only disable or enable windows firewall.

A known issue - Thank F**k for that m8. I thought I was going mad!
This problem has only occurred since I put win 7 on the laptop.
When both machines were vista I had no problems. I could file and printer share and whether windows firewall was on or not was never a problem.
