I bought a Linux sat box because

Years ago there was an advert: - Why do I roll my own? because if I didn’t I couldn’t smoke Old Hoban.
Forget P.C. Or health (for a minuet) it was an option that was open to what was then another way of doing something that was popular.

Why do we buy a bungalow and then try to put bedrooms in the roof space?

Why do we buy a Tablet and try to turn it in to a laptop?

This occurred to me when I purchased my first Linux box about two weeks ago.
With no manual (please let’s not go there it’s been done) finding my way round, what software is used and what this box could do.
I came to the conclusion I was trying (subconsciously) to turn my TM800HD into a TM6900HD.
The same or better EPG the same or better FAV and so forth.

I would like to (if permitted) start a thread
I bought a Linux sat box because

To get peoples input on why a Linux box. Not a brand war but why did you buy a Linux box.

Re: I bought a Linux sat box because

i bought a linux box, because back then id dont pretty much everything else with closed source receivers, and was getting bored with 'softcams' and stuff

6 months later, i sold my linux box before i smashed the front of the telly in with it cos i couldnt get it to do feck all, and went back to closed source receivers

i then spent nearly 2 years reading............

i bought a linux box because i had some time on my hands, and read about all of the things they could do, and wanted to learn more, and if possible, maybe one day, actually create something myself that would make one of them do more

I never bought my first 150 linux boxes. I installed SuSE Linux over a set of Windows 95 desktop PCs and suddenly we had a fast, stable operating system on boxes that were just too expensive (in staff time and unplanned overtime) to support.

Re: I bought a Linux sat box because

    Hi,

I bought my first linux box an ipbox 250s at a flea market in poland for 20 zlots which converted to around £4. On return home as expected it didn't power up but everything was entact. Opening the box and replacing a 30p doide which had failed, the unit powered up.
From then on the endless nights of flashing and tinkering started.

Now all my boxes are linux based and i see no reason to change at this time.

    regards
