I heard on the grapevine that MicroDirect has closed its shops and it's gone into administraiton.

No idea if this is true or not. Does anyone know anything?

the web site is still up and running.........

I see the story has been posted a few times over the last couple of years. AFAIK they are still going strong. TBH I prefer Aria and Scan to microdirect.

Their website seems to be running ok,heard same as "Oneman says" over the years,a little too pricy for me though,so not used them much, but any dealings i have had with them have been good,if your not comfortable using them,or any site for that matter...dont ! always plenty of alternatives.

Maybe there is some truth is this:

Especially look at the comments section:

Apparently today they stopped trading, the staff have been kicked out and the bank accounts have been locked"

I'd suggest that it's a bad idea ordering anything on the website?

There seems to be nothing official anywhere about this, only rumours. I have a trade account with Microdirect and Aria and not heard anything.

I've been using them for years even back when they used to go to Bowlers. Last time I drove past the shop (Last week in Stockport) it was open for business.

I do find that their prices has gone from being the cheapest to being quite expensive, but at least you have a physical presence to complain to unlike Ebay (I wouldnt buy anything decent from ebay, I'd rather pay a few quid extra for the backup of a proper dealer).

But to be fair both Scan & Aria have gone the same way. Sometimes you can get better deals from Ebuyer or even Amazon. For me though if I need something fast I can goto the shops, the only one I didnt like going to was Scan.

Don't know if their forum ever worked but that is down.

Any particular concern Purity ? Do you have something on order with them ? If you are looking at ordering then there are plenty of alternatives if you are worried.

No, nothing like that, was just interested, and it was a heads up for anyone planning to order anything

As trade account holder and a regular customer I can confirm that Microdirect closed the week before last. The Stockport store closed in April and they moved stock to the much smaller Upper Brook Street store. That was the first I knew that something was up.

At the same time I noticed my trade discounts where getting smaller and smaller, typically I would get £3 off a £100 bill, lately that has been 50p.

A few weeks ago I noticed that they were running out of stock on major items. I joked then it looks like they were going bust. Tuesday a couple of weeks back I was in the shop for the last time, and it was cash only, that was the final thing which confirmed to me that they were bankrupt.

Since then the shop has been closed with a "under refurb sign" the website is still going but if you add stuff to the basket you see there is way of purchasing anything. A friend also told me that all staff have lost their jobs.

Apparantly it was because they were unable to pay their suppliers due to poor recent sales. The suppliers the put a windup order on them.

Is a damn shame as I fell out with Aria and Scan is too far from me.

i used a few times over the years the shop never looked finished to me lol, im more than likely to drive past the warehouse on stockport road and will let you know ,

Thanks for the info at82. I also noticed that stock was getting incredibly low, when I was looking at a few items recently. It was fairly convenient to go there, for hard drives etc, but I'd never buy any other hardware from them because their returns service was awful.

I've had no issues with Scan, so I'll continue to order stuff with them online. Shame though for people that lost their jobs

Good to know as I had an account with them but not used them for months. Aria isnt too far from Microdirect so I'll go there next time. :)

There are some good info on Hexsus forums, apparently some ex-microdirect staff are posting info.

Apparently there is something dodgy going on as directors Iqbal and Shareeq (dunno the spelling) sold the wharehouse and properties to shareholder of MD pensions, who just happen to be Iqbal & shareeq.
Microdirect are in court in August. Taken there by a supplier called Micro Peripherals, who put the winding up order on them.

Also MESH has gone too, and Median are in the process of being bought out.
