Well as the title say's, i have a reasonable understanding to why after speaking to Zad. However an explanation in text would be good along with some linkys.
Its the 2nd gen I have.

Begin able to use blue tooth the way everyone else can. Not having to mess around to use the ring tones you like. Begin able to try apps without paying and run homebrew apps

The main reason is to run XBMC on your Apple TV 2 (I assume its a 2nd gen you have).

Do a search on YouTube (Apple TV 2 xmbc) and you will see why people love it so much. In short it enables you to play all your media straight (MKVs included) off a NAS instead of having to use iTunes.

Once you have XBMC installed you can then install addons for iPlayer and 4OD. You will also want to do a search for icefilms ;-)

I ordered one off eBay and am awaiting its arrival. Can't wait :)

Theres also Plex but that requires a server app to run on a PC.

The question you should be asking is why should I not jb the device. Not why should you. The benefits of jbing far outway those of not.

MH I believe your scottish, and therefore tight. ;) So unless you like paying for stuff, then I would suggest jbing as it saves oooodles of money.

Now the tight thing was a joke boss man. Dont sack me please :)

There's a software suite from fireCore that may tempt you over to the dark side. The package known as "aTV Flash," available for both the older and the newest generation of Apple TV products, includes a Web browser designed for HDTVs (Couch Surfer Pro), access to weather forecasts, Last.fm, and RSS feeds - the latter two provided by Apple TVs first jailbroken app NitoTV. Also included in the bundle is media center app XBMC.
With NitoTV, you can create playlists and play additional media file formats via your AppleTV beyond those supported by Apple. On newer Apple TV devices (the smaller, black units), this list now includes support for .m4v, .mp4, .move, HE-AAC, AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV, with more on the way.

Older Apple TV devices can play even more formats: .avi, .divx, .eyetv, .flv, .m4v, .mkv, .mov, .mp4, .mpeg, .mpg, .ogg, .ogm, .rm, .rmvb, .wmv, .xvid, VIDEO_TS/VOB, ISO, AAC, AC3, DTS, FLAC, MPEG3, MPEG4, VBR MP3, WMA, SSA and SRT.

Meanwhile, with the Web browser provided by Couch Surfer Pro, you can access Google search on your Apple TV, save bookmarks, view your browser history and even use your Apple Remote, USB mouse or Loop pointer to navigate the Web.

Have a look Here

At the moment I use an old mini mac to stream .ts files recoreded from my DM800 satellite receiver along with other media type types from my NAS box.

Only problem is that the mac mini will not play HD recorded .ts without stuttering so question is will it play HD .ts media?

Right, I am in...

Thought I had bricked it at first as as iTunes said it failed to restore. However is WAS jailbroken ATV2 Black installed, now installing XBMC :)

What else does it do now?? I dont know.

Right so I have now got my Apple TV :)

First of all XBMC installed and seemed to work fine BUT on playing MKVs it crashed every time. After mucho fookin about with it I found that if I turned off Hardware acceleration that it would work but stutter really bad.

It turns out that the stable build doesnt support hardware acceleration (so why the fook is it available to select in the menus then ?!), so I set about SSHing into the box and then updating it to the latest nightly builds (which currenly seems to be 15th May). Now I am a bit baffled here coz 'nightly' to me would mean that there is a new version every night ?! Anyway my MKVs now play splendily :)

Unplugged it all and took it in to conservatory and plugged it all back in. ATV2 booted up ... saw the Apple logo ... then a blank screen :(
After another 40 mins of fookin around with the TV settings (I assumed it was that because it worked in the living room) I found out that if I didnt have the ethernet cable plugged in then I got no picture ... WTF ?!
Anyway I set up the wireless networking (by plugging the cable in until I got a picture and then unplugging it) and now it all works ... hurrah !

Then I went to install the iPlayer addon but now I find that doesnt work with nightly builds ... WTF ?! Really miffed about that coz thats a feature I really wanted to work :(

wow the atv2 is work in progress... it will never be a full blown htpc iplayer? is there really any point its available on your pc, ps3, cable box and tbh there is fook all on the beeb to watch again ;)

Lanstrom have you had a good read about your problems? what sort of file are you trying to play? all my .avi and .mkv work a treat only thing that doesn't as I stayed with the old official release is the .iso's

The problem is that my 'pc, ps3 and cable box' are all in the living room so I wanted something in the conservatory to play the odd MKV or my music collection and the ATV2 is now doing that perfectly but I would also like to add iPlayer and any other TV catchups if possible.

I am loving being able to airplay music from the iPod and videos from the iPad2 to the ATV2 :)

Thats pretty much, how mine is going to be setup also.

So if you really need catch up tv then the only way is buy atv flash black and then using the browser go to bbc or itv etc....
