could ne1 advise if there is a software proggy to get my info from this hard drive running vista and then transfer it to the new win 7 hard drive

when you install win7 it should create a file called windows.old where vista would be, is that what you mean?

was going to install on a new drive hopefully get all my settings from the old drive then format the old one

Just plug the old drive in aswell. It should recognise it as a slave drive and you should just be able to copy the data.Just like when you plug a usb in.Hope this helps.

The tools you are looking for is called Windows Easy Transfer. You should find it in the system folder under accessories. I would however download the latest version from MS just in case,

Download details: Windows Easy Transfer for transferring from Windows Vista (32 bit) to Windows 7

Loads better then just copying files because it will copy user settings from your profiles including MS office settings, bookmarks, and a whole heap of other stuff. Very good if you are using outlook as it copies type ahead entries, dictionary, connection settings, etc.

You will get prompted of what to back up and where. Then place the file created on a USB key, network location, etc and then restore in W7 using that file.

thanks to the best forum on the internet now up and running with your help

thanks again

the windows easy transfer, only thing ive found missing is my emails in outlook express (cant find outlook expreess),but should be capable of solving that

FWIW, there is no Outlook Express in Win7 - it's been Windows Live Mail since Vista.

just upgraded from vista,on the vista i just clicked windows mail and my emails downloaded from about 7 addys
cant find windows live mail this is my problem

sorted the live mail but it asks for my passwords to the accounts (forgot them always had windows remember them
is it possible to retrive them
