ok got newsleecher with supersearch and using astraweb but I keep downloading files that take ages to download only to find out its either:

1. password protected
2. not the format I wanted
3. missing files.

I read some tuts on the web and they say read the .nfo first to get info on files and use nzb to fetch the required files but when I search say for a film, not all have .nfo or nzb and when i do have the nfo it doesnt always have complete info.

so my question is, how do you guys do your searching and minimize downloading crap?

I use NZBMatrix and NZBIndex search, because you don't have to pay. Nearly all the d/ls I've had have worked fine, Hope that helps.

The problem with password rubbish is that people download the film, then upload again with a password in it, they put it on a lot of different groups but the same groups the non passworded film is on and use the same nfo so you won't know if its passworded or not until you use it or someone posts that it is passworded. Most the good forums like the one sneaker mentioned will probably remove any with passwords. There are other forums like nzbdogz, nzbsrus, merlins portal or Newzbin but that one isn't free.

More and more passworded crap creeping into newsgroups.

when u say not the file format u want.what u mean?
u should get rar files but also u will have some par files
if they dont show as pars then download and install quickpar 2
.then find what should be par file and tell it to open with quickpar .
then run the pars files and it will repair any broken or missing files for you.

I use EasyNews. Their webinterface gives you a thumbnail preview, so you never fall for password scams.

JTT - when i say different format i mean its the wrong video format (movies). I like to download stuff to watch on the ps3 and sometimes i'd download something and its in a format where i would need another program to convert. i got mkv2vob but I dont really want to have to keep converting. - thanks for the link!

Jaffa - what's the point of people uploading passworded files? do they get something out of it other than maybe satisfaction of pissing people off? sorry for the noob q.

Some sites that post nzb,s use passwords so only members of their site can use them and to gain access to the password you have to acknowledge the poster ( Thank him) others like you say just like to p**s people off

It as become increasingly annoying the number of passworded posts that are now on usenet. What i do is to grab an nzb and download the first rar file, right click it and try to extract if its passworded and i cant find the password on any of the usenet forums i dump the nzb & try another. Saves you from downloading the entire post that way. Rather dump 50MB than download 8GB and find its passworded

This method also works for your second point, if you can extract the partial file you can see what format its in. You can also use a program like media info to verify exactly what format its in.

I tend to use binsearch.info to search the newsgroups.
Lorrebreakers advice about downloading the 1st part of the rar is the best way to check if it is passworded.

As for your comment about missing files, have you used the repair and extract function of newsleacher?
If there are enough par2 files newsleacher can rebuild the missing files to complete the collection.
