Problem with my shower (pull cord)

I have a gainsbourough (cant remember model number - im at work) electric
    shower

Last night I had a problem switching off the shower by the pull cord, so i
climbed onto a chair and tried to turn it off closer to the ceiling for a
    beter grip.

I noticed that the part that the cord comes from was very hot, and also a
burning (almost like fish) smell was in the room after my shower. Is this on
the way out? What can i do to fix the problem? Any help would be very
    grateful.

Sounds like the switch needs replacing. I had a similar problem a couple of
months ago. Replaced the switch and it now works fine

OK thanks. I'm a bit of a novice but is it a case of disconnecting the
socket and buying a new one and replacing it??

Yes and make sure you use a heavy duty pull cord switch. (at least 40amps)

Sounds like the shower is drawing more power than the switch can handle, has
the shower been changed since the switch was installed??

When you are changing the switch, make sure the power is off before hand, a
lot of showers, especially in older properties run from a separate fuse box
    than the main house one.

    Good luck,

    John.

The show and switch were installed at the same time. It has been in since
    december 2002
The house is old, the fuse box is outside (with fuse wires!!) and i am
assuming it gets its power from there.

Do not assume. Buy a voltage tester for about £13. You will always use it
    again.

The most likey reason for the heat and fish smell is poor/loose connections
at the switch. Make sure the new connections are nice and tight and also
remember to label the supply and load cables when you remove the old switch
so that they are put into the correct terminals on the new one.

    Problem fixed.
It was the switch and after going to b and q (twice - incompetent staff and
    faulty product - don't ask!!!)
I had found that one of the wires (can't remember which) had come loose, and
another one had melted!!. It is now fixed up with a 60amp swithc so
    hopefully no more problems.

Thanks to all who posted advice and tips
