yes it can, but i think its by code only.

I think this http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/ would be good place to start.

2.1 is the next rom for the hero, and beta's are out and can be installed, so you then can install google and google navigator, plus a whole host of others that are 1.6+ compatible.

Dependant on the installed rom you may need to create a goldcard, took me about 10mins, then a custom rooted rom can be applied, that link should give you places to go for then

but it is still sim locked, alls you are doing is rooting the phone.

AFAIK a code is the only way, and they aint free

when the phone has been rooted you can then put a htc generic rom on it Im not sure if this will unlock it as mine was already unlocked but it does make a differenc to how it works

From what I have read, seems it can be unlocked if you are on Orange or T-Mobile but not if you are on Three.

I also called Three and they confirmed the unlock code is not available for their network.

i have no rooted mine and am on my third custom rom i am now using hero21 which is a unofficial android 2.1 but i haven't been able to get MMS working on Asda MOBILE which is vodaphone ASDA have sent me a email with the settings on but i still keep getting "edit the content"

finally got the mms working it needed the use only 2g networks turning on so i guess im in a very bad reception are for 3g because on 2g i get 4 bars on the signal but when it was looking for any network it was 1 bar sometimes 3 but then it would drop back to 1or 2

Also look into changing the rom, I did on a HTC touch (from 6.1 to 6.5 image) and it made the phone 200times better, some smart HTC folks on there

he is only giving 3 a week to members I am a member which is where i got my hwero21 rom from but i have noe gone back to a htc generic rom 2.73.405.38

have you not tried the modaco custom rom for the hero? I find it better than generic.

hi dave yes i have tried the modaco 3. and the 3.0.0.4 wavesecure also the hero21 which is a android 2.1 but gone back to htc2.73.405.38.rooted it does what i want without all the apps that are in the modaco 3.0.
