hi guys

my mum has talk talk broadbandbut this only works when it wants but now has stopped altogether!
now who is responsible for fixing the telephone line that comes ito her house as talk talk have admitted there is a problem and think it may be the box in her house.
she has only had this a few months and doesnt hammer it so she has put up with being unable to get on and being disconnected until now when she just cant get connected.
what do you guys suggest she can do to solve this issue as she is contracted for 18 months.

just tell her to contact them and kick up fuck!!

get her to fone from your house and say she cant get internet or phone calls, it may make them respond quicker

lay it on thick saying if there was an emergency then she cant fone out etc

the phone works ok as she has phoned them from it so they know there is no prob on that score but to me if they took her line over then surely it is their problem to sort it out?

i cant see Bt BEING RESPONSIBLE IF SHE DONT PAY THEM? UNLESS TALK TALK LEASE FROM THEM? EITHER WAY MY MUM CANT FIX IT SO SOMEONE MUST HAVE 2?

How many sockets does she have in the house? Does every socket with a phone/fax connected, have an ADSL filter plugged into it?

If more than one, find the BT Master Socket.



Remove the face plate off the front.



Next connect the ADSL Filter to the master as shown.



Here's an ADSL Filter incase you don't know.



If the Internet works OK then it's a fault with your internal wiring and is your responsibilty to repair.

If it's not working then BT will have to come out and check the line.

If your PC isn't near the Master Socket then this can be a pain in the arse to move it, but if BT are called and the fault is found to be your internal wiring then you will get billed for a call out, so make sure you check first.

If Talk Talk (Carphone Wharehouse) don't want to play threaten them with Offtel (Telecom Regulators), if they still don't want to play, call Offtel.

I'd say 7/10 cases are problems at the BT exchange.

the socket is an old on it isnt a master as shown it is alot smaller mayb i should buy one or just call them out to upgrade my mums old equipment?

It will still be a master, if you open it up there will be a capacitor inside. These are really old now, I'm not sure were you would stand with regards to upgrading the socket. Phone Talk Talk back as they should have really advised you of what I said already, the BT help desk would have asked you to do the above.

If you are confident to remove the extension cables yourself, try it out, write down the colours that are connected to the numbers.

Generally it will be

Blue/White = 2

White/Blue = 5

Orange/White = 3 (Ringer if not connected slaves with no capacitor will not ring)

If they are not these colours or not in that sequence then make sure you right them down first. You'll be able to reconnect them using a Stanley knife blade, but be carefull not to damage the connectors.

But they could still have the same problem with a new provider and all of the above would still apply, with regards to call out fees ect as it's BT who are responsible for the phone line.
