squeeking mouse

Anyone know what this is.

Whenever I move the cursor around on screen, or use the scroll wheel, my base unit makes a scratchy squeeky type noise... it isn't very loud, but it is starting to p*ss me off now?

Re: squeeking mouse

Try a different mouse.

If it's USB try a different port.

If it's PS/2 see if you can borrow a mouse off another PC for a while.

See if it does it when using mouse keys: start > run > control > accessibility > mouse tab > tick use mouse keys an confirm.

Thanks Pob.

Tried that but no joy. I think it is the HD as it makes the noise at other times, it's just that moving the mouse and using the scroll wheel seems to agrivate it!

Have also noticed that web pages load slower and force me to wait for elements to load, and this is something which has never happened before... This makes me think it is something to do with the HD and HD cache!!

The noise sounds like a very quiet version of a pressure cooker letting steam off, and that is layered on top of the regular popcorn noise the HD always makes.

Re: squeeking mouse

Back up your data if you have't already.

See if the hard disk manufacturer has any tools that assess the 'health' of the disk.

Re: squeeking mouse

could be lots of things, caps on the board going, check your heatsink and fans on cpu and gpu for dust, could be a heat problem. Could be grfx card on its way out.

I had an old p4 with rambus memory that someone gave me, powered up fine, no problem in the bios. installed windows and like you say, every time I moved the mouse it would screech from the small speaker on the mobo. Never did find out what it was, was too much trouble for something with 256mb rambus memory.

Re: squeeking mouse

Wow, well, have been doing more research and the causes and solutions seem to vary widley.

The most common solution people are saying the PSU. Get a better quality one or take the one you have appart and clean it.

Others say disable smooth scrolling in IE fixes it, one person said they disables CE1 (or something) on the CPU in Bios fixed it... Don't know waht to do... Think the warenty is still good ar Aldi so might just back it up and throw it at them to fix it.

Someone also said they installed the proper MoBo drivers which have power saving options on it and that fixed his. Most of the solutions seem to point at power options and the PSU.

Re: squeeking mouse

noise isn't coming from the HD, so that is good news... It's loudest round the PSU, so, must be that!!

Better get my tool box out and Aldi warrenty at the ready...
