Feedback Score: 0 reviews | Re: Memory size help Since SP1 Vista has been able to 'see' 4Gb RAM. Prior to that it would probably only have shown up as 3.18Gb. Whilst the OS can see your 4Gb it still cannot use all of it. A 32bit OS can only use upto 4Gb of address space, and the lower address spaces are allocated to other buses (e.g. PCI) before the memory. For example; I build a PC with 4Gb RAM and put in a graphics card with 1Gb VRAM. Installing a 32bit version of Windows means I can only use the frist 3Gb as the first 1Gb of address space is allocated to the graphics card. I would 'lose' another 1Gb of RAM as, since XP SP2, Windows reserves 1Gb for itself. Meaning that the most a program would have to use on that system is 2GB regardless of whether I install 3GB or 4GB. However, the 64bit OS versions don't have it all their own way. 32bit software (e.g. Photoshop) can only access 3GB RAM anyway. Last edited by little_pob; 9th July 2009 at 10:14. |
