Re: cpu running at 100%

Is he running anti-virus ?

Quite a few of them are very good at running the processor at 100%

Take a look in the task manager and find out which task is hogging the processor.

Re: cpu running at 100%

He's running AVG only, had his pc wiped recently, could it be the driver for the graphics card.

Re: cpu running at 100%

windows key+r, taskmgr, OK
Processes Tab
Click on CPU column header to sort (might have to click twice to sort correctly high to low)
what ones are using the highest % (apart from system idle)

Re: cpu running at 100%

In task manager, system idle 50%, task manager 50%, total cpu usage at the bottom is 100%, the graph is 100%.

Re: cpu running at 100%

Strange, System Idle usually doesn't contribute towards the graph or processor load. It System idle is 50% then I would expect the processor to be only 50% busy.

Task manager using 50% is an indication of something seriously wrong in Kernel mode. Very likely a driver is sitting in a loop or something similar. This could be down to all kinds of problems from damaged drivers to mis-configured or spurious interrupts.

Re: cpu running at 100%

Last time I saw this was when WMP11 was trying to add an incomplete Divx movie to the list of shares, the thing hogs your CPU endlessly until you remove the dodgy file.
