what was this virus called m8, is there a removable tool for it sometimes norton bring them out its a long shot but you never know.

im pretty sure it was something like win32heur

i did find an 8 step guide to remove it, but after following step one, everything went totally tits up

Mate, if you want, I can upload my XP sp3 disc image? (I've got OEM or Retail, both are genuine, but I added sp3 with Windows Unattended CD Creator.) You would need to use your own PID to install XP...

How much data do you need to recover? If you want to ship it me, I can grab all your gear off it, burn it to DVD and send everything back to you? (Cover the p&p though please!)

You will have to install xp your self on your system as the drivers loaded when in another system would be different from you on.

This is what DW is all about tho. Also get your self an enclosure and you will be able to move the data from a HDD easily to another computer in future.

PID = Product Identification Number (Serial Number!)

ahh right, ive got a proper serial number on the bottom of the laptop

Install a GOOD antivurus such as Avast or Kaspersky (and im sure others are also good) on your WORKING PC. Then take the laptop out of the virus ridden PC and put it into a USB caddy and plug it into a working PC. The antivirus on the working pc will protect, detect adn kill any virus. Then take all the data you need, such as doc, excel files and so on but dont take any .exe files out or programs just documents.

Plug the hard drive back into the non working pc and do a full format as i believe personally this is the only way to properly get rid of a virus, then just install xp and transfer the documents back. if you need any help let me know, also same as the nice chap above, if you need data recovered, same offer from me goes. to be honest tho you dont want to be posting hard drives with the posties banging things about. let us know how it goes tho.

let this be a lesson tho, protect ALL systems. my recommendation is avast professional edition, very good and easy to get from loads of sources.

Echo theAvast comments above, Been on setups for about two years now. Light on resources, but does the job properly.
