In limbo!
i recieved this email to my junk folder today seems a little strange that they would email and not send a letter/forms to me. never heard of them doing this before although the links look legitimate im guessing it could be for identity fraud.

heres the email.

dear applicant

after the last annual calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to recieve a tax refund of £178.23 gbp.

blah blah blah then there is a link which is this

HMRC - Tax Refund.

phone the tax office and ask m8, just to be sure

Yeah good plan i couldnt copy and paste the email so just wrote the basics the layout screams scam tbh but as i say the links seem legit.

Just looking at this email further it actualy says dear apllicant they would know my name surly?

Also it says the details of the credit debit card were the money will be refunded.

How can the tax office refund money to a credit card?

McAfee site advisor says that page has not been checked out yet but if you click on any of the other links on that page, ie: home, contact us etc then site advisor says they are o.k. It could be a scam as they use links to try to authenicate the scam.

I would ring as digi said just to be sure, they also have an email addy which you could forward the email to and let them get back to you.

btw....was it https when it asks for CC info ??

Yep it's a scam an almost convincing one i must say but the classic mistakes were made no name. Badly laid out, typical link asking for my info which the tax office would already have.

Beware: Tax Refund Scam | Tax Rebate Blog

I spoke to HMRC the other day.

They don't do email, only post.

All forms etc come with a cover letter with your name and address, at least my experience is this.

Look at the full domain name, surely that'd set alarm bells ringing. It's a dotcom one, it appears to start off as the real one with the hmrctaxrefund.com tagged on the end. Now if a real one, I'd expect it to be separated by a slash, so very sneaky, lol.

The golden rule is that if you receive an email from ANYONE claiming they want to give you money then it's almost certainly an attempted fraud.

l replied /// lm looking at 1.000.0000.00000 pound comin my way

Amazing! Sargie posted a weblink in post no.7 which confirmed conclusively that it was a scam.

Since then, we've had another eleven posts telling him that it's a scam!
