id give windows7 64bit a try a few friends are trialling it they all say better than vista and quicker at the momment although only beta.

i have running in virtual pc but its difficult to try properly as many of the things virtual pc offers as hardware devices etc.

Got windows 7 (64bit) working pretty well on a Turion laptop... Drivers can be a bit difficult. Make sure you apply the mp3 patch as soon as you install!!

Alternatively - Windows 2008 64-bit is very stable, but don't bother if you want to play loads of games because they'll all complain.. "Cannot be installed on a server OS".

LinuxMint (derivative of ubuntu) is pretty cool (using it now).

    Re: New pc...What operating system.??

forgot to add - if you don't go for 7/2008 or linux mint... then it's vista ultimate 64-bit with all the updates etc.... XP is getting a bit old hat.

Often these days I install a few different OS' and then use clonezilla to back them up so I can ghost it back if I change my mind... ie. I'll install Vista/2008/ubuntu, ghost each time, then decide which I prefer.

Using firefox/thunderbird makes OS' less of an issue these days anyways, especially with stuff like virtualbox allowing me to run XP on top of Ubuntu so I can use photoshop within Linux etc....

    Re: New pc...What operating system.??

    cheers for the replies....

would like to try win7...the only thing that puts me off windows 7 is the trial.......it ends in a few months and i dont want to be reinstalling everything.....

my 1 brother uses vista 64 and says its better than the 32bit version , runs better bla bla bla where as my other bruv has just switched back to vista 32 as the codecs for mce dont work on the 64bit version aswell as getting drivers for the 64bit version.....

the tale of the brothers lol....my eldest says 64bit my youngest says 32bit...and it does cause quite a stir when they start lol....i think i should install
48 bit to keep both on my side lol.....

not to clever with linux so i think ill give that a miss.....

    Re: New pc...What operating system.??

Linux is easier to use than you think... Try Linux Mint as a starter... If you're not sure just download the livecd - so you can try before you install (slight speed hit).

I always go for 64-bit on whatever OS, EXCEPT for XP 64bit, because that really is just shite. At the end of the day - you're not using your CPU to the full potential if you're using 32-bit.

    Re: New pc...What operating system.??

Nice setup (I've the black anodised version of that case). I'm sure the 920 was only £220 from Mesh in the middle of December, must have been OEM. (And the pound has recovered slightly against the dollar since then )

Anyway, most hardware within the past 3-4 years has 64bit Vista drivers available.

Peripherals are a different story (esp. webcams). But this is a case of the peripheral manufacturers being greedy and wanting people to buy new 'Works with Vista' certified products - a similar thing happened on the change over from Win98/ME to XP.

For codecs there is a 64bit version of the k-lite codec pack: K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit
    tl;dr
