Connecting to the Internet

I used these instructions and connected my Dreambox successfully to my laptop via crossover cable.

I have used FlashFXP and successfully connected and sent things to my box etc.

After updating to v2.1, I realised my cam was not installed (I had no files in var/keys/ except for an empty folder '/nagra_roms') and after unsuccessfully finding out how to put this right, I gave up

So instead, I've updated to the Jade mod (MrDude) which seems very good! Although... I cannot do anything with it as I need to connect my box to the Internet in order to update the modded files once installed on the box.

As I said, I am connected to my Vista laptop via crossover cable. My laptop is connected to the Internet via wireless.

How can I make my box connect to the Internet through my laptop?

(P.S. I tried the whole connecting to the router business before I went down the route of a direct crossover cable connection but I couldn't get it to work).

Thanks guys.

Re: Connecting to the Internet

Simple, just connect the box to your router with a normal ethernet cable.

If you couldnt get it to work, now is a great time to ask about it here.

Re: Connecting to the Internet

Its true. Makes life so much easier using a router than faffing around with crossover cables as you can do it all from the comfort of your wireless laptop.
Just ensure that the Dreambox is set to fixed IP (no DHCP). You can then use that IP addy in a browser to do other stuff with the dreambox should you wish. e.g. stream tv, setup shares, setup timers.

Re: Connecting to the Internet

You can use DHCP with no problems. I use it with mine.

Instead of worrying about that now, lets try and take a look at the problems he is actually facing at the moment.

@ the OP, it would be great if you can let us know what you have tried so far when connecting via a regular ethernet cable and what errors you encounter.

Yes but with a fixed IP, makes life easier than having to keep checking what IP has been dished out if you use the GUI like I do.
Like you say, should be a simple matter of connecting the dreambox direct to the router. We are assuming he has a router with additional ports.

Re: Connecting to the Internet

Sorry fellas been away from the computer and the box today.
I'll get on to it tomorrow and start from the beginning connecting the box to the router.
Cheers for your replies and help to come! I'm looking forward to getting this sorted!
I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know the outcome then we can work to resolve it (because I know I won't be able to get it to work by myself, ha).

Cheers guys!

Re: Connecting to the Internet

I tried connecting the box via DHCP and it doesn't seem to appear on the router's list of connected devices? (the problem I was having before)

I think the part I'm struggling with is what network settings to put in to the Dreambox's settings.

I plugged my ethernet cable in to my box and my router, and made sure that DHCP was ticked (on the box's settings).
This doesn't seem to work though? Are there additional settings I need to adjust on the box such as IP, Gateway etc etc. (I fiddled with these for a good few hours one night but gave up in the end. I assume that if I type 'ipconfig' in to the PC's Run command then I'll get all the info I need? It will then just be a case of knowing what info goes where in to the boxes settings?)

Thanks for your help guys. Apologies for the long posts... I like to provide as much detail as possible!

:o)

Re: Connecting to the Internet

Has this ever worked on a network before? Also, is this a DM500C? If yes, is it a clone? I only ask as there have been a few posts here saying that the clone machines seem to have broken ethernet ports.

Once it is connected, he should be able to use the netbios name to connect, for instance my DM600 shows up as dm600pvr on the network. I can get to it with this name with IE, FTP and Telnet.

Re: Connecting to the Internet

The only things I've really connected to my router before are my Xbox 360 and my PC. I didn't really have to fiddle with any settings (from what I can remember).

Yeah it's a DM500c and I assume it's a clone as I remember someone telling me that all of them from now on are clones as the actual company don't make them any more (how trues this is I don't really know). Saying that though, I have managed to connect to my laptop via crossover so it can't be the Ethernet port?
