I've discovered the problem is related to Avast.

I think it only affects Vista users.

After removing Avast and using NOD32 instead my browser has been working fine.

I found this thread below which might be useful to anyone in a similar situation.

Hope this thread helps anyone else who finds themselves in the same boat. This problem has plaged me for about a month.
