If you want them to burn onto DVDR and watch like a normal DVD then your only option is DVD rips.

No a HD or BD rip will not play on a normal DVD. You can download XVID or DIVX rips and convert them to VOB but you would lose quality as they are already compressed and you're making work for yourself as the DVD Rip is already done for you, all you have to do is unzip and burn

Some DVD players will play XVID and DIVX burns but again it's a compressed format. You might want to look into investing in a DVD player or something with a USB port then just downloading, pop on a memory stick or USB HDD and play from that rather that burning every DVD
