Domain setup...

Hey guys!!!

I'm running a home server on a dynamic IP address, i run a forum with a domain from DYNDNS which isn't really that attractive, I want to run something like http://www.something.com instead of http//registeredname.is-a-geek.com I need to know how to set-up a premium domain on my site which remember is a dynamic IP address, also need to set-up a mailing facility on that premium domain when I come round to requiring it with the help of the forum.

Regards, John.

herbs will become famous soon enough
Why don't you run your forum on a hosts machine instead?

Because it's cheaper to run from home and plus I have more control over what applications and extensions to use, my own unlimited space ect.

Fair enough, I was just curious. Would have thought there were hosts that gave you enough control though.

prag has a spectacular aura about
www.no-ip.org

You need the no-ip client and you need to register your domain with them for something like $8 which is about 4 quid for the year use their client on the host machine and then their DNS servers will point to your host and as long as the host is running the DNS client then www.whatever.com will point to it no matter what your ip is.

Hope this helps

Ahhh cheers mate, think that could be the answer to my problems, would it also work an SMTP protocol from my registered domain?

Well why dont you just request a static IP addy from your ISP?

that way it will make it easier.

I'm not concerned about updating my ip, my router updates my ip with what ever DNS I decide to use, I need a "www" direct instead of a ip, it's more easier to remember a "www.something.com" a posed to "82.788.212.212".

solster is a jewel in the rough
buy a domain name from a domain registrar, such as 1and1 and then signup with zoneedit (which is free) they give u 2 DNS servers to use, update your domain entry (usually able to do with the registrars control panel) with the 2 DNS servers and then just use your domain name, you will need to run a local service that will update the DNS entries on zoneedit when your WAN ip changes.

1and1.co.uk is 1.99 a year for .co.uk and 69p a month for 5 mail accounts.
