Discuss if i wanted to at the General Computer Topics within the DigitalWorldz - Satellite, Cable, Console Forums; if i wanted to upgrade my cpu do i need to change the mother board or can i just get another chip...

    you can just get another chip providing your board supports it m8 best thing to do is post up what board you have and im sure some one will let you know what you can use ,,,,i will myself wen i get back from collage , if it aint been sorted allready

    Depends on how old your PC is. The older it is the less likely you are of being able to find a economically viable replacement for your CPU.

    amd athlon xp 2800+
    dont know board name unless some one can tell me how to find out

    It will be printed on the board some where - usually a makers name and then some numbers/letters

    Should be socket A type processor ,getting old now. If you want to upgrade I'd get a new motherboard and look at dual core processors , can be a bit pricey though.

    Its probably a Socket A (aka SoA), which AMD stopped making a while back.

    The AthlonXP only went up to 3200+, which you could probably overclock your 2800+ to with decent cooling....

    as the man says it is a socket a and they only went upto a 3200+ and i just saw one sell second hand on ebay for £100 now that is rediculas wen you an pick up an entry leval intel cor duo for £120 ish

    Yes I agree best options is either clock it or sell the MBD and CPU and get new M BD and CPU. Do not forget you may may need new memory too to get the best out of the new system but this should not be a problem you can usually get good money for selling the old bit on ebay.
    Do check all components do not rush it. plane ahead.
